He was born on September 13, 1958 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From a very young age he showed extraordinary talent for singing, and by age 14 he was already performing in nightclubs on the island. His career took off when he joined Eddie Palmieri's orchestra, where his powerful and emotional voice immediately set him apart.
His greatest success came in 1988 with the song «Ven, Devórame Otra Vez», a track that became an anthem of romantic salsa and catapulted him to international fame. The song dominated the charts throughout Latin America and the Caribbean for months, and remains one of the most recognized salsa songs of all time.
Throughout his career he recorded more than 20 albums and collaborated with figures such as Tito Puente, Celia Cruz and Marc Anthony. His voice, capable of moving from the most intimate whisper to the most passionate cry, made him one of the most complete performers of his generation.
